It was Cory's turn.
Quick calculations rushed through his head as he stepped up, his starter following at his heels.
“Our excited little friend is ready?” the instructor asked, smiling at the Phanpy.
He tilted his head questioningly at his starter and in answer she ran to her place in the arena, boldly puffing out her cheeks and ears. Cory had to stifle a laugh, one hand across his lower face to hide his amusement.
Why was it that everything his starter did was so unbearably adorable?
His instructor confirmed that he was ready as well and as he agreed he could feel his body tense in anticipation. Richard had been soundly defeated, but Cory wasn't about to make this round quite so easy.
His opponent's Poke Ball seemed to descend for an eternity, perhaps two, before it landed and burst with light. “Begin,” she said, and suddenly he was staring across the field at the sly form of a Purrloin.
“Defense Curl,” he ordered quickly as the cat finished materializing and immediately raced forward towards his Pokemon, but Before his Phanpy could so much as begin to respond a solid clap and the shock wave that was Fake Out had sent her reeling back.
He raised one arm to shield himself from a thick gust that sent his clothes rippling dramatically around him, wincing as his Pokemon successfully curled into a ball. The Purrloin Growled, strafing around her. “Good, keep it up,” he encouraged, and both Pokemon responded in kind.
A Purrloin probably learned mostly physical moves at a lower level, but if it had a good special attack the exchange was about to go in the feline's favor. “Tackle!” he said, tongue darting out to lick his lips.
The Purrloin was quick to go on the offensive and orbs of light that Cory quickly recognized as Hidden Power were suddenly circling around their opponent. They combined into a single, large ball of energy as his Phanpy uncurled and as she charged the resulting orb shot forward to meet her. Barreling directly through the attack, she met the cat in kind and sent the much lighter Pokemon flying with a bat of her head.
The cat landed smoothly and immediately began prepping another Hidden Power. “Good, again!” Cory ordered, eyes sharp with focus.
Three times his Phanpy charged through the Purrloin's attacks and three times she sent it flying. Both Pokemon were in bad shape now, panting as the fight went on. Cory hesitated for only a moment. “Flail!”
His Phanpy's movements turned frenzied now, her trunk waving wildly as she charged. The cat dodged to the side and Cory swiftly ordered her to follow. She barreled through yet another Hidden Power before launching the Purrloin with a series of painful blows.
His Phanpy looked bad, but the Purrloin was struggling to stay on its feet. “Ice Shard!” he ordered, heart racing.
The Purrloin wasted not a second charging another attack, but his Phanpy shot faster. A spear of blunt ice hit the cat like a brick to the face and the orbs turned to wisps that turned to air as it fell.
His Phanpy watched her fallen foe cautiously until the light of a Poke Ball engulfed and devoured it. A wide grin spread across Cory's face.
“Great job, girl! You did it!” he said, voice full of praise. Despite its poor condition, the little elephant tramped in place with excitement. Cory couldn't help but laugh at the display, a pure and genuine sound.
Take that, Richie.
